Overview

Gmail can scan links and external images in emails to protect users from malicious content. Enabling these settings adds warnings for suspicious links, scans images for hidden threats, and identifies dangerous URLs hidden behind shortened links.

Prerequisites

  • Super Admin access to the Google Admin console

  • Gmail Settings administrator privilege

Instructions

  1. Sign in to the Google Admin console

  2. Navigate to Apps > Google Workspace > Settings for Gmail > Safety

  3. Scroll to the Links and external images section and enable the following settings:

Identify links behind shortened URLs β€” Scans shortened URLs to uncover and check the destination for malicious content.

Scan linked images β€” Scans images referenced by links in emails to detect hidden malicious content.

Show warning prompt for any click on links to untrusted domains β€” Displays a warning whenever a user clicks a link to an untrusted domain in any email, not just emails already flagged as suspicious.

Once all settings are enabled, click Save.

Note: The warning prompt for untrusted domain links is not available for users accessing Gmail via IMAP or POP clients.
