Overview

Google Workspace allows organizations to control where their data is stored through Data Regions settings. Ensuring that the Russian Federation is not selected as a supplemental data storage location helps organizations comply with data sovereignty requirements and reduces exposure to foreign data access laws.

Prerequisites

  • Super Admin access to the Google Admin console

  • A supported Google Workspace edition: Frontline Plus, Enterprise Plus, Enterprise Essentials Plus, Education Standard, or Education Plus

Instructions

Set your primary data region

  1. Sign in to the Google Admin console

  2. Navigate to Account > Account settings > Data regions

  3. Set your data region to United States

  4. Click Save

Verify supplemental data storage

  1. In the same Data regions settings, locate the Supplemental Data Storage section

  2. Ensure Russian Federation is not selected as a supplemental storage location

  3. Click Save

โš ๏ธ Data region settings apply to covered Google Workspace data at rest. Not all Google Workspace data types are covered by data region policies. Review Google's documentation on data regions to understand which data is included.

Note: For additional protection, consider using Context-Aware Access to restrict logins based on geography or IP address. This prevents users from accessing your organization's Workspace from restricted regions regardless of where data is stored.
