Overview

Setting a session duration ensures members are periodically required to sign back in to Slack, reducing the risk of unauthorized access from unattended or compromised devices. Members can be warned before their session expires to minimize disruption.

Prerequisites

  • Workspace Owner, Workspace Admin, Org Owner, or Org Admin access in Slack

  • Available on all Slack plans

Instructions

Free, Pro, and Business+ plans

  1. From your desktop, click Admin in the sidebar

  2. Select Workspace settings from the menu, then click Security

  3. Click Edit next to Desktop session duration or Mobile session duration

  4. Choose to sign members out whenever they close Slack or after a set period of time

  5. Click Save

Enterprise plans

  1. From your desktop, click your organization name in the sidebar

  2. Hover over Tools & settings, then click Organization settings

  3. From the left sidebar, click Security, then select Security settings

  4. Click Edit next to Desktop session duration or Mobile session duration

  5. Choose to sign members out whenever they close Slack or after a set period of time

  6. Click Save

Note: Members will receive a warning two hours before their session expires and a final reminder 15 minutes before being signed out. Session expirations are applied gradually after the setting is changed β€” not all members will be signed out immediately.
