Enable Password Leak Detection in Chrome

How to enable password leak detection in Chrome to warn users when their credentials appear in a known data breach.

Written by Kavi Harshawat

Overview

When a user enters a password on a website, Chrome can check it against Google's database of known leaked credentials. If the password has appeared in a public data breach, Chrome warns the user so they can change it before an attacker uses it to take over their account. Enabling this through the Admin console ensures users get these warnings automatically and can't disable the protection.

Prerequisites

  • Administrator access to the Google Admin console

  • Users are running Chrome 79 or later

  • Safe Browsing is enabled for your organization (see Enforce Safe Browsing in Chrome)

Instructions

  1. Sign in to the Google Admin console

  2. Navigate to Devices > Chrome > Settings > Users & browsers

  3. Select the organizational unit you want to apply this setting to

  4. Search for Enable leak detection for entered credentials

  5. Under Configuration, select Enable Leak detection for entered credentials

  6. Click Save

Note: This setting has no effect unless Safe Browsing is also turned on. Make sure Safe Browsing is enforced for your organization before relying on leak detection.
