How to enable enhanced pre-delivery scanning to improve detection of phishing and malware in Gmail.

Overview

Enhanced pre-delivery message scanning slightly delays the delivery of suspicious emails to perform more thorough security checks. This improves Gmail's ability to detect sophisticated threats β€” including zero-day phishing links, malware embedded in documents, and evasive self-modifying malware β€” that might otherwise bypass standard filters.

Prerequisites

  • Super Admin access to the Google Admin console

  • Gmail Settings administrator privilege

Instructions

  1. Sign in to the Google Admin console

  2. Navigate to Apps > Google Workspace > Gmail > Spam, Phishing and Malware

  3. Select the organizational unit you want to apply this setting to

  4. Scroll to Enhanced pre-delivery message scanning

  5. Check the box to enable the setting

  6. Click Save

Note: This setting works best when combined with other Gmail safety protections such as attachment protection, link and image scanning, and spoofing and authentication settings. See Configure Attachment Protection, Configure Link and Image Protection, and Enable Automatic Security Updates for related settings.
